Upper level in the gold leaf

Upper level in the gold leaf

While there was a bit of confusion starting off at the Fairmont, it was smooth sailing or should I say chugging, once we got on the train. Now we were in the Gold Leaf car which I debated and researched before booking and reviews were mixed but I decided to splurge and I have to say it was worth it!

We had assigned seats so there was no jockeying. We found our seats and settled in. We were immediately introduced to the team on our car – Brandi, David, Megan and Alex. The took such great car of us, they definitely made the trip that much worthwhile and I am sure I will rave about them later in this post.

On the lower level was our dining car that sat only half of the group from above so IMG_1701while you waited for breakfast you had fresh scones and coffee and for the lunch wait there was wine and cheese. The food was AMAZING. There are actually chefs on board and they were wonderful with my gluten-free request, even making me a gluten-free cookie for a snack after a delay! Did I mention too that the spirits, wine and beer were unlimited? I enjoyed some west coast wine, Bailey’s on the rocks and even a gin and tonic as we rolled west.

Of course the trip was more about the scenery than the food and it too was superb. The teams servicing the cars have it down to a complete science radioing to each other when animals are spotted. Over the two days we saw a grizzly bear, a black bear, eagles, salmon, and elk. Sadly most of the pictures of the animals are fuzzy blobs so I don’t have any proof!

I have over 700 photos so I can’t share them all but have selected a few of my favourites!

Over a week a go I flew west with my dad (well not exactly with my dad. we took separate flights since he has Air Miles and I have Aeroplan) to start our “Go West” adventure that was a gift for his birthday. We had two nights in Banff before boarding the Rocky Mountaineer – watch for a subsequent post on the train portion of the vacation.

Banff Springs Hotel

From just outside the hotel heading in to town

What an amazing and magical place to stay! Banff Springs opened over 125 years ago in 1888 and has obviously been well maintained and renovated over the decades. The hotel is situated in a national park right near the Bow River. It is smack in the middle of nature! We actually saw a pair of elk grazing on a hill right next to the hotel!

Every nook and cranny of the hotel has something marvellous to see. I am going to share some of the pictures I took during our stay (over 700 were taken in the 5 days I was away) to give you a glimpse of this stunning hotel.

Treats

Chocolates, twitter birds & a tin full of snacks

Everything is perfect at theFairmont Banff Springs. I had a chance to check out the spa (that review is to come) and on the second night the outdoor pool which is heated to make it comfortable in the chilly mountain evening air. I was even left a welcome treat that first night.

I’m already planning a ski trip back to Banff for 2016 with stops in Jasper and Lake Louise. The one regret of this trip was not getting to Lake Louise on the full day we had in Banff so I have no choice but to head back!
