Day 2 of the Juice Cleanse Journey

On to day 2…

Still at home sick with this cold but it has nothing to do with my juicing!

While I didn’t get any of the pineapple, orange, ginger that I loved so much there was a tasty watermelon, lemon and even the green one from this morning tasted better than I first thought it would.

2 of my 6 bottles for today - the coffee maker has been quiet & the wine isn't mine!

2 of my 6 bottles for today – the coffee maker has been quiet & the wine isn’t mine!

I should mention that I get an email each morning telling me what is in each labeled bottle and each bottle has a number on it, as to what order it gets consumed  – I must confess I did jump to the watermelon one since I wanted something sweeter and I can’t even finish them all in one day! There is just so much juice – it isn’t a fast remember.

I have had a few moments where I thought a piece of toast would be oh so yummy and comforting to this cold but I have held out and am still just on the juice.

One more day to go… fingers crossed for something with mango and pomegranate!

Well day one isn’t over yet but I wanted to post a status. I am working from home sick with my cold so it has been easier to keep the juice cold and make frequent bathroom trips.

My meals for the day

The little cooler pack was on the porch when I woke up – containing 6 bottles of juice, 2 elixirs and my tea bag.

Juice 1 was green and had lots of veggies.  Not being a fan of V8 makes it hard for me to love this one but I didn’t hate it!

I did enjoy the one with the pineapple in it and look forward to the grapefruit one.  I am on the fence with juice with the beets!

I must say that I am not hungry at all! I do wish I wasn’t home sick with this cold so I could see how I really feel!

If I have peaked your interest check out Raw Juice Guru. I should mention that I am not being compensated for these posts (but maybe they will give me a free trial of the Raw Food Cleanse!)

Don’t ask me if I have l lost any weight yet – I don’t own a scale so it will have to wait til Friday!

Juice Feasting Cleanse – I haven’t even started and I’m hungry

So I am on day 2 of prepping for a raw juice cleanse – it is called a raw juice feast (Check out Raw Juice Guru to learn more). I am hoping to improve my overall health but get some energy back and make some improvements to my mood and things. And by things I mean improvements to the number on the scale – no I am not sharing that with you all but will share the pounds lost.

So for the past two days I have done no meat, no caffeine, dairy, sugar, alcohol – all the good things in life! So far, so ok. I actually feel a cold coming on more than feeling too deprived. From what I read the juices will be tasty and plentiful… If this works I might do it monthly! I will let you all know.

I learned of the cleanse from Jamie LeighTo – check out her story here.

Getting out of a rut?

blah, Hashimotos, hypo-thyroid, rut

It has been over a month since I blogged last… maybe you noticed, maybe not (don’t worry I won’t be offended if you didn’t).  I have been a bit blah and a bit lacklustre and a  bunch of moody! As I had posted previously, I have Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism and that broken thyroid of mine sometimes does things to mood and energy… however there is no evidence that I can blame this on that organ in the middle of my neck.

So my self diagnosis tells me I fell in to a rut.  That ever happen to you?  Where you are just sort of blah and not yourself?  At times you aren’t even sure why (and you surely get asked enough by friends and family!)…

Well I am looking for your best tips to get out of a rut… I think I am on the way out of it but would love your tips and tricks on how you turn things around.

My first commute on the bike…

bike lanes, commuting by bike, Toronto cycling

As a regular ‘spinner’ it is quite embarrassing that I don’t ride a real bike.  It isn’t that I don’t have one but more that I haven’t made the effort… til now.

Last week I decided to take the first steps and ride the bike to work.  I live and Leslieville and the Brainrider office (see my post about The Chelsea Shop) is on the U of T campus, west of Queens Park.  My journey started shortly before 8am with my helmet on and my laptop in my side bag…

Here is a synopsis of my ride:

Dundas to River

  • Garbage day… made it a very stinky ride… pedal faster to get to the fresh air

Cabbagetown

  • Best part of the ride – no cars, beautiful homes… feeling free

Parliament

  • A bit scary… cabs, buses, cars parked in front of Tim’s
  • See the price of gas and feel even better about taking the bike

Wellsley

  • Good thing there is a bike lane…
  • Then the bike lane ends and it is each rider/driver for themselves!

U of T Campus/ Harbord

  • I have essentially arrived and have the grease stain on my leg to prove it

Does this make me a real cyclist?

Don’t ask me about the ride home… that is a whole other story!

No, I can’t either… but a new friend of mine Alfatah Kader is doing just that in April to raise money for clean water and aid for orphan’s in Africa. He has been training non-stop with 8 hour runs through NYC with a satchel on his back to simulate the gear he will have as he treks through the desert.

Check out his donation page (click here) and donate if you can. His goal is $1,000 for the charity.

I will let you all know how he does!

Quad Spin East, spin

As a spin instructor I have a confession to make… I don’t ride except when I am teaching.  It had been at least five years when I had walked in to Quad East on Thursday to take a class. I was greeted by Micheline who is not only an instructor but one of the owner of the three Quad locations.  She gave me a tour of one of the most stunning studios I have worked out in! (Check out a slideshow of the Quad East space)  Class was preceded by a little pilates led by Micheline upstairs before we headed down to the cycling studio for our ride.

Micheline knows her stuff and loves what she does… and I know this because I know my stuff! Our 45 minute class had me sweating, breathing heavy and thinking I might see my lunch again! Making it all worth it was the 900 calories I likely burnt in those 45 minutes and the feeling of work so intense that my quads are still sore to the touch 3 days later. Maybe that is where they got their name from – SORE QUADS!

While I wasn’t sure I was going to like it and during the class I wasn’t sure I was going to survive, I will be back soon for another spin at Quad.

(This review is an honest review of my experience at Quad however I did receive a complimentary class.  If you are looking to try Quad, find a friend who rides there and have them take you on a Thursday for a free ride – check out the schedule here)

The Self Image Ups & Downs of a Former Competitive Fitness Model

competing, fitness, fitness model, self image

What feels like many, many years ago I trained to compete in fitness model competitions.  My friends always felt like they walked in to alternate universe when they came to my competitions. Hundreds of fakely tanned (not just a few visits under the lamps, I’m talkin three coats of Pro-Tan), hairless, muscular men and women chomping

First competition – came in 12 out of 40

on chicken and yams and likely not drinking much water. On the women of course there was the nails and make-up. It was always a surreal feeling when you have made it to the day of the ‘show’.

I competed three times and I have to tell you that when you are on that stage you forget about:

  • spending 3 hours a day in the gym,
  • watching everything that goes in your mouth,
  • spending an hour a week sorting supplements

But as great as that moment is on the stage and how great you feel and look as you get stronger no-one really prepares your for the ‘post’ show

Came in 3rd place in my 2nd competition; friend Angela came in first

when you have to give yourself a bit of a rest and you relax on just how strict you are in watching what you are eating.  Of course the real pros, the girls on the cover of Oxygen magazine know what to do and how to do it, so that they don’t balloon after a show.

Now I don’t have a single regret! I have made  friends that I will have forever and learned how to eat and train properly but there are days where I struggle with how I look (and I have been told I look pretty good right now).  Always think back to having a tighter tummy and svelte arms. I now enjoy eating anything I want and having a drink once in awhile.  Some friends even tell me that I am now more fun! What does that mean? That I wasn’t fun when:

  • I carried all my food for the day around in a cooler,
  • had to schedule socializing around my cardio,
  • had a vicious mood swing from being so hungry I wanted to gnaw my arm off

I will likely do more posts about those competitive days and love answering questions about how I trained and ate, etc. And I would love to hear about what you people out there are doing to stay fit and healthy… Let me know!
