Spring Cleaning + A lesson in Customer Service

In finding out that I have an allergy to dust I decided it was time to have the ducts cleaned. Something that hasn’t been done in the almost 8 years I lived in my home (I know I know… I should have done it years ago). On the advice of

My ducts looked like this!

My ducts looked like this!

someone in the Leslieville Group on Facebook I went on to Groupon and found a deal, did some research on the company and bought myself a deal for Duct Cleaning Depot. I set up my appointment over email with Adrian for a Friday afternoon at 2:30pm.

I can work from home so it wasn’t too big of a deal to have the appointment in the middle of the day. What became a bigger deal was when I got a call and an email to tell me that they were going to be about an hour late. That happens, totally understand. But then an hour turned to 90 minutes and I made a phone call to the technician who had called me. At 4:30 he told me he was at the 407 and 404. Being that I work with a client up in Thornhill and that is my travel route home I knew he’d barely make it for 5pm, 2.5 hours after my appointment time!

Those who know me well know that I am crazy about punctuality since time is someone’s most valuable commodity so I got frustrated and emailed and called Adrian he owner and gave him a piece of my mind. He offered to do the work at no charge (ok, I might have demanded it but he agreed) if I would reschedule. So we made a date for Wednesday.

Now I hope you’ve made it this far in the post cause this is where the lesson comes in and things turn around for me and my ducts. Adrian and his technician showed up on time and did a fantastic job. When it came down talking about the monies I decided that I wasn’t going to take the work for free. Adrian paid the taxes that was owed on top of my Groupon and we called it day. Before he left we got to talking and his technician was joking around that Adrian doesn’t usually come out to jobs and how shocked he was to see the boss hauling equipment from the truck. He wondered who I was.

Adrian explained that he wants all his customers to be happy and was embarrassed about the situation from the previous week. He said he couldn’t not come and make sure I was satisfied. What a great attitude from a small business owner! I will recommend him to anyone I know with dirty ducts.

Now on the contrary I have had painters not show up for 3 appointments and had the Appliance Repair Guys allow me to cancel an appointment without a charge in a snowstorm to then send me an invoice (so they say) that I didn’t get for the missed appointment. How did I find out? Well I got a notice from a collections agency for $95.40. Did I mention it cost $315 to repair my microwave and I had already paid that charge?  So on the other side of the customer service spectrum I will NEVER use them and will tell everyone I know the story. (I had to pay the extra charge, they did not care to hear my side of the story or that they were loosing a customer).

This is a short post… almost a cry for help. Well not a cry (that’s just me being a drama  queen) just a request. I am attempting to go gluten-free to help with my Hashimoto’s (read more about my broken thyroid) and am going to start researching how to start living sans gluten! If you have some advice, tips, recipes please share. I will try and chronicle my journey here. I don’t anticipate success right out of the gate!

I recently wrapped up a course on Courera.org and had to share with everyone – it was amazing. Now I can’t vouch for other programs but the Content Strategy for Professionals offered by Northwestern was top notch.  I signed up for the Signature Track so I could earn the actual certificate through doing the assignment and marking a couple from other students.

The weekly content was done over video divided in to small chunks. There were different guests each week that specialized in specific areas of strategy. I enjoyed the sessions especially when I could do them on my iPad, on the train, to see my dad.

I’ve also recently taken some courses in social media at UBC that cost me $600 a piece and these were more valuable in giving me some actionable skills and ideas.

And if you want to learn something that is more of a hobby than work, they have that too. You can try:

  • Music’s Big Bang: The Genesis of Rock ‘n’Roll
  • The Science of Gastronomy
  • Enhance Your Career and Employability Skills

I just signed up for two new ones! You’ve got to check it out.

Happy 180th Toronto

Happy Birthday Toronto, Toronto

As I was driving up the Don Valley Parkway this morning to a client’s office, I was reminded that today the great city of Toronto is celebrating it’s 180th birthday.  I started thinking what a great city I live in and how fortunate I am to be able to live and work in such a world class city. I knew from a very young age, when I would visit my family here in Toronto, that this is where I would end up. The energy of the city was intoxicating (as a teenager it was, some days now it is exhausting!)

The Toronto list of greatness is quite extensive and substantial. We have some of the best hospitals in the world with researchers who are leading the way in finding cures and treatments for disease. I don’t even need to mention Sick Kids Hospital and the amazing work that is done there every day! Top notch universities that students flock to from all over the world to study at. Theatre, film, music, museums, art – where else can you find musicals, an international film festival, concerts, a documentary film festival and small venues where budding talent can showcase their skill? You can spend the day lost in culture, history or the work of the Impressionists How about the food? And ethnic neighbourhoods where you feel like you have been transported out of Canada to another country. And don’t forget the sports teams!

Toronto Skyline

Toronto Skyline

Now, Toronto does have quite a few “needs improvement” areas but today for it’s birthday let’s not complain about the traffic or our crazy mayor, the crumbling Gardiner Expressway or our Maple Leafs (all though they did win last night). Let’s share with each other what we love about this city.

Tell me, what is your favourite thing about Toronto?

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month!

colon cancer, colon cancer awareness month, GI health, GI Health Centre

March is know for coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb… for green beer, sometimes Easter and the spring equinox. Did you know it is also Colon Cancer Awareness Month?

Have you had a colonoscopy? Is it time to book one? If you you are looking for experienced GI doctors, a comfortable atmosphere and almost no wait time then I recommend you check out GI Health Centre.

Now I will disclose that GI Health Centre is a client of mine (check out their new website!) but last month I accompanied a close friend for his ‘procedure’ at GIHC.  It felt more like a spa when you walk through the doors and check in. The colonoscopy was done on schedule and without any complications. We got a full report with pictures.

Now if you have a history of colon cancer in your family or are 50 years old or older you should be calling right now to book a colonoscopy. Colon Cancer is treatable and survivable if it is found early enough. Don’t let the fear of a colonoscopy prevent you from being in control of your colon health!

This is my first spa review and it really should be my 30th or so! I have been enjoying visits to “the spa” for decades. I have a lot of writing to do to catch up! (Correction, I have reviewed Ste Anne’s and totally forgot – you can check it out here)

Today my other half and I visited Miraj Hammam Spa at the Shangri La  for facials to celebrate the Valentine’s weekend (sure, why not make a weekend of it!) and it was as wonderful as expected (I had very high expectations).

Our couples room

Our couples room

We were greeted in the exotic lobby by smiling attendants who took our boots and coats and led us to the change rooms where we changed in to our robes. Once ready we were taken to our couples room for the most blissful facials I have had (and I have had dozens). My skin is rehydrated and happy, my hands and feet were massaged and I am totally relaxed.

After our facials were were given Moroccan tea, grapes and baklava. If you are looking for a staycation retreat the Miraj Hammam is just perfect. It will be my new place in the city for facials.  I can’t wait to go back to try the Hammam and Gommage and see how it compares to my hammam experience in Istanbul.

Skiing at Le Massif

Last weekend we headed out east to Quebec City (more on that in another post) and wanted to get a day of skiing in. Le Massif was recommended over Mont Ste. Ann by several people and even some locals we met in a pub the night before.

I have to say that it was an amazing hill with great snow, stunning views and just top notch!

Enjoying the views and the powder!

Enjoying the views and the powder!

When you arrive you are actually at the top of the hill – a first for me. You don’t get the usual lift ticket you attach to your jacket but a card that is scanned by the electronic gates – how cool is that!?

Now there are only a few green runs, most are blue and black, even triple black diamonds but if you are there for just a day or two it there is definitely enough acreage for an average skier like me. The time skiing vs the time on the lift is just perfect. There were no lines so it was right on the gondola that was practically brand new!

I can’t say enough good things about this place and I can’t wait to return. Only downside is how far it is from Toronto!
