My backyard oasis in the city

Before…

If you’ve followed my blog over the years (sorry if you’ve missed me the last 6 months… I had writer’s block!) you are aware that we have had some battles with the raccoons in our backyard. We’ve struggled with the sod and the pond and it is not only the raccoons but also the lack of sunshine due to the tree canopy. Well this year we started early and I wanted to share photos that may inspire others living in cities with small spaces.

We started with trimming our trees and removing a Blackberry tree that was making a mess in the yard and blocking the sun. Karmatree did an amazing job for 1/3 of other quotes so if you need some trees trimmed or removed give them a call.

Garden wall, before...

Garden wall, before…

In the above before photo you can see the start of the garden wall – this was a huge undertaking but we wanted to do something unique that would possibly allow for me to grow herbs that would be safe from raccoons and squirrels (who actually even eat the plastic pants we have out on the deck).  Houzz was a fabulous app if you are in to design but I must warn you that it might make you sad too, to look at all these gorgeous homes and yards. You’ve been warned.

A whole lot of work went it to planting, moving the pond and getting the wall up. We had friends consult and actually do some of the work (thanks Colleen) and the end result is is even more spectacular than I could have imaged after spending 2 straight days out back with family and friends.

Scroll down to check out the after photos and let me know what you think!

After, from above. You can see my ladder on the wall. So I can reach my mint, berries and cilantro.

Madison Holleran, social media

I am supposed to be writing about the next stop in our trip but something I just read really has got me thinking and not a new thought but something I needed to get down and share.

Many of my friends have heard me talk about social meeting and how I feel it exasperates the sadness and loneliness people might feel, or even that sense of failure and under-achievement most of us deal with during a crisis of confidence. I am sure you all have that one friend who is posting all the wonderful photos of happy relationships, beautiful vacation shots (yes I know I just was doing that) and nice homes and cottages, etc. And while you don’t begrudge your friends of anything, does it sometimes feel like you are the only one with struggles because you have forgotten that most people are posting only the best aspects of their every day.

Well the story that inspired me to stop and write this post is about Madison Holleran (you can read it here). It is about a girl whose life on Instagram is nothing like what she is living or thinks she is. Now this isn’t a bashing of social media but really gets one thinking about the generations that are growing up with it and just how challenging life in a social spotlight can be.

To quote the author, “Everyone presents an edited version of life on social media.” And this really is a new phenomenon the author reminds us. Before phones it was the mail and before the Internet we had just the phone. The article sites a scary stat, especially if 74% of girls are actually doing it, “nearly 74 percent of girls agreed that other girls tried to make themselves look “cooler than they are” on social networking sites.” I can’t imagine how challenging it is to grow up with these added pressures.

Now this post might not really have a point, like I said, I am not bashing social media, I love being able to connect with old friends, make new ones. Maybe I am just trying to warn young people and their parents, read Madison’s story, share it with your children, remind them that they are not alone, they are not the only ones who struggle, even though all they see on their screens are happy, filtered faces.

Detox is Amazing!

detox, Rehab, Rob Ford

This post is inspired by Rob Ford and today’s Toronto Sun (read the article here). Like Rob, I am trying to detox. Unlike him the experience has not been amazing. I am trying to get over caffeine, sugar and processed foods in a hope to get my energy levels up and in general feel better. A friend and I embarked on this journey Saturday with a prep day. Today is day 4 with 6 more to go! (A future post will give you a synopsis of how this all goes – I have my doubts about making it 10 days. Short term goal is Friday.)

I have had cranky moments, hungry moments, aches, pains, headaches. So I am curious on how a man who is trying to get over alcohol and crack cocaine is having an awesome time in week 1! I have watched many an episode of Intervention – shouldn’t it be awful? Isn’t he supposed to be cut off from the rest of the world and his enablers?

How is this man making phone calls and telling reporters it is amazing? And he wants to return phone calls to constituents? I want someone to take away my phone and let me sleep!

Eldad Hagar, Hope for Paws, stray dog rescue

As I type this post I am watching videos from the Hope For Paws videos on their site at www.hopeforpaws.org. Each video makes me so sad until they get to the end and the dog is safe and being taken for a bath, a check up and ultimately a new home.

Hope for Paws

Each video is a short glimpse in to the life of stray dog or dogs, living on the street somewhere in the US (now the US must have a bigger problem that we do in Canada because I have yet to see a stray in Toronto).  It is so devastatingly sad to see these animals on the streets, hungry, in pain and scared.

Eldad Hagar

Eldad Hagar

Their angel’s name is Eldad Hagar.  He arrives on scene with cheeseburgers and a leash and unlimited patience.  This man has to be channelling St Francis of Assisi the patrone saint of animals.  He is just amazing.

Hope for Paws is always looking for foster parents, forever homes and donations. So please share this post and watch some of the heart-tugging stories.  Some of my favourites are:

Fiona – she was actually blind in both eyes when they found here.  She is quiet famous though, her story went viral!

Gaia –  She had a litter of puppies in the wild after being hit by a car (this video you can find on the Hope for Paws page)

There is one that I can’t find (saw it many months ago) where a stray dog leads Eldad to  her litter she was hiding after he plays sounds of pups whining. It is just the happiest ending!

If you have the time to share their videos, please do – it is the least we can do to support such a great organization.

car mats, Hyundai Tuscon, Weather Tech

My dad recently got a new car and ordered these custom, laser cut mats to keep the carpet on the floors like new.  Now, my Hyundai Tuscon is not more than two years old but the winters have not been nice to the carpets so I decided to order some of my own from Weather Tech.  They came in a couple days via Purolator and today I had the car detailed and installed them. And by installed them I mean ‘clicked in to place’! They fit like a glove and don’t leave any nooks or crannies for the salt to get in to!

Well my car looks and feels brand new! What do you think? (I forgot to mention that I was not compensated by Weather Tech in exchange for this post)

I think every Monday should be Thanksgiving Day

thanksgiving

I realized today that I haven’t blogged in awhile but had lots of things I wanted to get down on paper… er, I mean pixels.  I think it is sometimes hard to remember how great your life is when you are sometimes taking on water and don’t have a bucket to bail with nearby.  I am guilty of this…

I have a great family and a special someone in my life, I have two great dogs who love

Synchronized napping in front of the fireplace

me even when I forget to fill the bowl or don’t want to take them for a walk.  I am relatively healthy (see early post about my broken thyroid for more details on that one) and so are most of my friends and family.

More recently I have been reaching out to a lot of social media connections, former colleagues and acquaintances and am thankful to have the channels available to me to meet so many people who I otherwise wouldn’t have.  And doubly thankful for those people who do take the time to respond, advise and counsel.

Fall in Muskoka

I could go on and on with what I am thankful for – Canada, freedom, a roof over my head, food in my fridge, dollars (as few as they may be right now) in the bank, trips to the cottage, the upcoming ski season… but I will stop right here.

I think I might start making every Monday thanksgiving day and kick it off by making a list of all the great things in my life.  Imagine if everyone focused on the good in their life to start off the week, how different things could be…

What are you thankful for?

Ellen Degeneres, Helene Campbell, Justin Beiber, lung transplant, organ donation

Just finished watching Hélène Campbell’s video clip from here appearance via Skype on Ellen Degeneres (if you haven’t seen it click here; the video made me tear up).  She is an amazing young woman who while waiting for a lung transplant has made it her personal crusade to build awareness around the issue of organ donation. She brilliantly used social media to raise awareness to her cause and tweeted Justin Beiber asking him to help her with this cause. With his help she has been able to increase the number of new donors by over 1,000.

Are you a donor? Sign up here (Ontario only)

Read Hélène’s blog and donate to her directly here

Bell, cable TV, rate increase, Rogers

Yesterday in the mail came my rate increase for my basic cable service… and an offer

Should I stay or should I go?

from the competition! My only two two pieces of mail. With an increase in my basic service and the rental of my PVR I would now be paying $60 a month. I just don’t feel like I am getting that out of this relationship, so I picked up the phone and dumped my cable.

My cable tried to save the relationship saying it could do better, asking if there was someone else. I told it ‘no, there isn’t anyone else’ since I have no intentions of entering a relationship with another provider and promised to return it’s things soon.

I hope that we will be happier without each other! I know I will be a tiny bit wealthier each month… who knows some day we may reunite but I am gonna give it a try on my own.
